Conquer the slumbering demon Duke Sucellus! This OSRS guide covers strategies, mechanics (prep phase, gaze, vents), weaknesses, loot, and tips for this Desert Treasure II boss.
OSRS Duke Sucellus Boss Guide
Deep within the frozen asylum of Ghorrock Prison lies Duke Sucellus, one of the four formidable bosses unlocked after completing Desert Treasure II - The Fallen Empire. This slumbering demon requires a unique preparation phase before engaging players in a methodical, rhythm-based encounter that tests positioning and reaction time.
This guide details Duke Sucellus's mechanics, the preparation phase, effective strategies, loot, and tips for defeating this icy menace.
Location & Access
- Requirement: Completion of
Desert Treasure II - The Fallen Empire
. - Location: The Asylum, Ghorrock Prison (beneath Weiss). After the quest, the main prison entrance leads directly here.
- Fastest Travel:
- Ring of Shadows teleport (requires Frozen Tablet infusion).
- Icy Basalt/Weiss POH portal, then down through the Salt Mine into the prison.
Fight Overview: Prep & Battle
The Duke Sucellus encounter has two distinct phases:
Phase 1: Preparation - Awakening the Duke
You must first wake the Duke by poisoning him. This involves gathering resources within the Asylum while dodging hazards:
- Gather Mushrooms: Navigate the side corridors, avoiding Ice Falls (shadows indicate landing spots, freeze player) and the Extremities' Gaze (cone AoE from eyes on the wall, deals massive damage, drains prayer, freezes). Pick Arder and Musca mushrooms (2-3 of each depending on Herblore level - 80+ needs 2). Safe spots exist near the mushroom patches. Tip: Running precisely past extremities as they close their eyes can bypass the gaze.
- Mine Salt: Mine Salax Salt deposits in the main chamber, dodging poisonous Gas Vents (predictable pattern, 3x3 AoE, damage reduced by facemask/slayer helm). Higher Mining level/better pickaxe speeds this up. Need 12 salt total.
- Brew Poison: Use a Pestle and Mortar (available inside) to grind mushrooms into powder (need 12 of each powder). Combine 6 Arder Powder, 6 Musca Powder, and 6 Salax Salt in each of the two Fermentation Vats. Wait briefly, then collect 2 Arder-musca poisons.
- Wake the Duke: Use both poisons on the slumbering Duke Sucellus to initiate the fight.
(Alternative Prep): Grind 40 of each mushroom powder (requires more gathering) and feed directly to the Duke (5 damage per powder). Faster fill, less running, but click-intensive.
Phase 2: The Battle
Duke Sucellus (440 HP) attacks on a 5-tick cycle (3.0s), increasing to 4 ticks (2.4s) below 25% HP. Melee is the preferred style.
- Weakness: Slash. Demonbane weapons (Arclight/Emberlight) work but are only 70% effective.
- Standard Attacks:
- Melee Range (Slam): Raises arms, summons icicles (3x3 AoE, ~5 damage with Protect from Melee), then slams down (1x1 AoE on icicle spots, ~41 damage with Protect from Melee, unavoidable if on tile).
- Outside Melee Range (Magic Orb): Fires a blue orb (~48 damage unprotected, still hits hard through Protect from Magic). Avoid being out of melee range.
- Special Attacks:
- Freezing Gaze: Every 5th attack cycle. Chat message: "Duke Sucellus turns his gaze upon you..." Immediately hide behind a pillar within 5 ticks (3s) or take massive damage (~101). Safe message: "You manage to avoid Duke Sucellus' gaze."
- Gas Flare: Launched 3 attacks after Freezing Gaze. Targets the vent closest to you. Leaves damaging gas. Move behind the opposite pillar. Frequency increases as health lowers (every 5 attacks >75% HP, every 4 attacks 25-74% HP, every 3 attacks <25% HP). Launches 1 flare >50% HP, 2 flares <50% HP. Will not occur immediately after a Gaze (Duke does an extra standard attack instead).
Strategy: The Pillar Dance
The most common strategy involves using the pillars for protection and managing Duke's attacks rhythmically:
- Positioning: Stand directly behind one of the two pillars closest to the Duke. Use Protect from Melee.
- Attack Pattern: Wait for Duke to start his Slam animation. As his arms hit the ground, step out, attack once with your melee weapon, and immediately step back behind the pillar before the icicles shatter. You'll take minimal chip damage from the icicles spawning, but avoid the heavy slam damage. Repeat this "flinch" style attack.
- Freezing Gaze: When the chat message appears, ensure you are fully behind the pillar. Attack again once the "avoid" message appears.
- Gas Flare: When he launches gas, run to the pillar on the opposite side of the arena. Reposition behind it and continue the attack pattern.
- Enrage Phase (<25% HP): Duke attacks faster (4-tick cycle). If using a 5-tick weapon (like Soulreaper Axe), you can only attack every other cycle safely. A 4-tick weapon (Arclight, Emberlight) can match his enrage speed. Gas Flare frequency also increases. Maintain the rhythm and finish him off.
Recommended Gear
- Weapon: Scythe of Vitur (hits 3x) > Emberlight (4-tick, demonbane) / Soulreaper Axe (5-tick) > Arclight (4-tick, demonbane) > Noxious Halberd > Strongest Slash Weapon.
- Special Attack: Bandos Godsword (Defence reduction is valuable due to Duke's high Defence) > Voidwaker / Dragon Claws / Crystal Halberd.
- Armour: Prioritize Melee Strength. Torva > Bandos > Inquisitor (less effective due to Slash weakness) > Fighter Torso/Obsidian. Serpentine Helm helps negate poison from vents if needed.
- Ring: Bellator Ring (Accuracy boost helps significantly) > Ultor Ring > Berserker Ring (i). Lightbearer useful for BGS specs.
- Pickaxe: Bring your best (Dragon/Crystal) to speed up prep, unless 3-tick mining or using the powder-feeding method.
- Other: Facemask/Slayer Helm (gas reduction), Pestle & Mortar.

- Standard: Runes, noted resources (ores, bars), Javelin Heads, food, coins.
- Tertiary: Baron (Pet, 1/2500), Clue Scrolls, Odd Key (Quest item, only during quest).
Perfect Kills: Avoiding all avoidable damage (Magic orbs, Gaze, Gas, Ice Falls, Extremities) grants 50% more standard loot quantity.
Conclusion
Duke Sucellus offers a unique PvM experience combining a preparation phase with a rhythmic, positional boss fight. Mastering the prep phase efficiently and learning the timing for dodging his Gaze and Gas Flares while maintaining the attack rhythm behind the pillars are key to consistent kills. The rewards, particularly the components for the Magus Ring and Soulreaper Axe, make him a highly profitable and sought-after boss for dedicated players.
