OSRS Amoxliatl Guide: Chill Out This Frost Nagua!

Ready to dip your toes into Varlamore bossing? Meet Amoxliatl, the Frost Nagua guardian lurking within the ancient Ruins of Tapoyauik. Introduced during The Heart of Darkness quest, Amoxliatl serves as an excellent entry-level boss encounter, perfect for learning key PvM mechanics without overwhelming difficulty.

This guide will cover how to find Amoxliatl, her attack patterns and special moves, effective strategies, and the loot you can expect, including the unique Glacial Temotli.

Locating Amoxliatl

  • Requirement: Completion of the Varlamore quest The Heart of Darkness.
  • Location: Ruins of Tapoyauik, Varlamore (accessed via the Twilight Temple area).
  • Fastest Travel:
    • Pendant of Ates teleport (activate the statue near the Tower of Ascension).
    • Quetzal Transport System to Salvager Overlook or Quetzacalli Gorge, then run.
  • Shortcut: After the quest, use the lift platform in the statue/mural chamber within Tapoyauik to ascend to the Tower of Ascension, unlocking a permanent fast route back down to Amoxliatl's chamber entrance.

Amoxliatl Fight Overview & Mechanics

Amoxliatl uses a mix of Magic attacks and special abilities designed to teach important PvM concepts:

  • Weakness: Primarily weak to Crush attacks. She also has -2 flat armour, slightly boosting damage per hit.
  • Standard Attack (Ice Spikes):
    • Summons ice spikes on your current tile and around the arena.
    • Initial hit is Magic-based (use Protect from Magic).
    • Leaves behind an Icy Pool on your standing tile. Standing in these deals moderate damage per tick (6-10). Keep moving!
  • Special Attacks (Alternating after 2-4 standard attacks):
    1. Unstable Ice:
      • Chat Message: "Amoxliatl forms some unstable ice blocks around you."
      • Launches 1-4 ice blocks near you.
      • You have ~9 seconds (15 ticks) to destroy them using Melee ONLY. Melee hits are guaranteed max hits with increased attack speed (1 tick) against the blocks.
      • If blocks shatter (not destroyed in time), they create 3x3 Icy Pools AND heal Amoxliatl (16-25 HP per block).
      • Tip: You can eat food without attack delay immediately after destroying a block. Scythe can hit Amoxliatl and a block simultaneously.
    2. Icicle Crash:
      • Chat Message: "Amoxliatl disables your prayers and launches an icicle attack!"
      • Disables ALL active prayers.
      • Launches an icicle dealing up to 34 damage.
      • Action: Quickly reactivate Protect from Magic to negate the damage.

Strategy & Tips

  • Movement is Key: The primary mechanic is avoiding the Icy Pools left by her standard attack. A simple strategy is to attack Amoxliatl, then step two tiles away after she starts her attack animation. This drags her forward onto a clean tile, allowing you to attack again safely. Repeat this pattern.
  • Prioritize Specials: React quickly to both special attacks. Destroy the Unstable Ice blocks immediately with melee. Re-apply Protect from Magic the instant you see the Icicle Crash message.
  • Gear:
    • Focus on Crush weapons. Good options range from Dragon Mace/Sarachnis Cudgel up to Soulreaper Axe/Inquisitor's Mace. Multi-hitters like Dual Macuahuitl or Glacial Temotli benefit from her negative flat armour.
    • Prioritize Strength bonus gear as her defence isn't excessively high.
    • Bring Melee gear primarily, as Unstable Ice requires it.
    • Consider Thralls (Arceuus Spellbook) for extra passive damage.
  • Inventory:
    • Crush Weapon
    • Super Combat Potion (or Divine version)
    • Prayer Potions/Super Restores
    • High-healing food (Manta Rays, etc.) - less needed as you master avoiding damage.
    • Emergency Teleport
    • (Optional) Ectoplasmator (she's spectral), Pendant of Ates, Rune Pouch (Thralls/Death Charge), House Tabs.

Amoxliatl's Loot

Killing Amoxliatl gives two rolls on her main drop table, plus one roll for Frozen Tears.

  • Unique Drop:
    • Glacial Temotli (1/100): A two-handed crush weapon that hits twice per attack.
  • Tertiary Drops:
    • Frozen Tears: Common drop used in Varlamore crafting/charging.
    • Pendant of Ates (inert) (1/25): Used for teleports.
    • Tooth half of key (moon key) (~1/500): Part of a specific Varlamore key.
    • Moxi (Pet): 1/3000 chance.
    • Clue Scroll (Elite): Base rate 1/200.
  • Standard Loot: Includes runes (Water, Chaos, Death, Blood, Soul, Nature), noted ores (Coal, Gold, Adamantite, Runite), Water Orbs, Prayer Potions(3), Blessed Bone Shards, Water Talismans, and some rune equipment. Also rolls the standard Gem Drop Table occasionally.

Average Kill Value: ~13,600 GP (excluding uniques).

Conclusion

Amoxliatl provides a great introduction to Varlamore bossing and modern PvM mechanics. Her fight teaches the importance of movement, reaction time (prayer switching), and target prioritization (dealing with adds/objects). While not offering huge profits per hour on average, the chance at the unique Glacial Temotli and the solid standard loot make her a worthwhile kill, especially for mid-level players looking to hone their skills. Go forth and shatter that Frost Nagua!
