OSRS Beginner Bossing Ladder: Your First Steps into PvM

Venturing into Player vs. Monster (PvM) bossing is one of the most exciting parts of Old School RuneScape. Defeating powerful creatures for unique loot and the thrill of the fight is a major draw. But where do you start? Jumping straight into end-game raids isn't feasible.

This guide provides a suggested "ladder" for beginner and early mid-level players looking to dip their toes into bossing, starting with manageable fights and gradually increasing difficulty.

Before You Start: Ensure you have decent mid-game combat stats (around 70+ in Attack, Strength, Defence, Ranged, Magic recommended) and appropriate gear (refer to our Gear Progression Guide!). Always bring sufficient food, potions (combat, prayer, anti-poison), and teleports.

Step 1: Giant Mole (Falador Park)

  • Why Start Here: Very simple mechanics, low defence, decent beginner cash. Mainly tests your ability to manage supplies and locate the boss.
  • Gear: Melee (Dharok's set is popular for faster kills, otherwise standard melee gear). Falador Hard Diary helps significantly with the locator.
  • Key Mechanic: Mole digs and moves. You need a light source and spade. That's about it!
  • Goal: Get comfortable with a simple boss fight loop and managing inventory.

Step 2: Sarachnis (Forthos Dungeon)

  • Why Next: Introduces basic prayer switching and dealing with minions. Good step up in mechanics but still very forgiving. Decent chance at moderate value uniques (cudgel).
  • Gear: Melee (Crush weapon like Leaf-Bladed Battleaxe, Zamorakian Hasta, or Cudgel itself works well). Decent armour (Barrows/Torso/Obsidian).
  • Key Mechanics: Switches between Melee and Ranged attacks (simple prayer flick). Spawns spider minions (deal with them or tank). Sticky web attack briefly freezes you.
  • Goal: Practice basic prayer switching and add management.

Step 3: Barrows Brothers (Morytania)

  • Why Here: Classic OSRS content! Introduces multi-combat scenarios (briefly in tunnels), prayer drain, and gear switching (optional but helpful). Potential for high-value unique item drops.
  • Gear: Requires gear for all 3 combat styles, though Ranged/Magic are often prioritized. Trident/Iban's for Magic, Rune Crossbow/Blowpipe for Ranged, Whip for Melee. Prayer bonus gear helps.
  • Key Mechanics: Each brother uses a specific combat style (except Akrisae - requires Silverlight/Darklight). Prayer drains in tunnels. Chance of encountering brothers in the tunnels. Final chest puzzle.
  • Goal: Learn basic gear switching, managing prayer drain, and navigating a multi-stage encounter.

Step 4: King Black Dragon (KBD Lair)

  • Why Here: Introduces anti-dragon mechanics and group bossing potential (though often soloed). Iconic dragon boss.
  • Gear: Melee (Hasta/Lance) or Ranged (Dragon/Armadyl Crossbow with Dragonbane bolts). Crucial: Antifire Shield + Antifire Potion (or Super Antifire). Protect from Melee prayer.
  • Key Mechanics: Multiple dragonfire attacks (protect correctly!), standard melee attacks. Simple fight but hits hard without protection.
  • Goal: Master anti-dragon mechanics and fighting a harder-hitting opponent.

Step 5: Moving Towards Vorkath / Zulrah

These two iconic solo bosses represent the next major step up, requiring significantly more mechanical skill, gear, and stats.

  • Vorkath (Requires Dragon Slayer 2): Demands gear switching, specific movement during acid phase, dealing with undead spawn, accurate prayer usage against multiple attack styles (Melee, Magic, Ranged, Dragonfire, Special). Very consistent money maker once mastered.
  • Zulrah (Requires Regicide): Complex fight with rotating phases, requiring significant knowledge of rotations, precise movement, prayer switches, and gear swaps between Ranged and Magic. Potential for very high profit but has a steep learning curve.

Conclusion: Learn, Adapt, Progress

This ladder provides a framework. Feel free to spend more time on bosses you enjoy or find challenging. Watch video guides, read the OSRS Wiki, and don't be afraid to die while learning – it's part of the process!

Mastering Vorkath or Zulrah takes practice. If you need the stats or quest requirements (like Dragon Slayer 2) faster, consider Tons of XP's safe Skilling or Questing Services.
