Conquer the Waterbirth Island Dungeon! This guide covers strategies for killing the OSRS Dagannoth Kings (DKs) - Rex, Prime, and Supreme - including setups and drops.
OSRS Dagannoth Kings (DKs) Guide: Rex, Prime & Supreme
The Dagannoth Kings (DKs) are a trio of powerful bosses residing in the lowest level of the Waterbirth Island Dungeon. Representing the combat triangle, each King uses a specific attack style and possesses a unique weakness, offering valuable ring drops essential for optimizing combat stats. This guide covers how to reach them, their mechanics, and strategies for defeating Rex, Prime, and Supreme.
Getting There & Requirements
- Location: Waterbirth Island Dungeon, 6th level.
- Access: Requires partial completion of The Fremennik Trials to travel to Waterbirth Island (via Jarvald in Rellekka).
- Dungeon Navigation: Reaching the Kings' lair requires navigating a complex dungeon. Key steps involve:
- Passing doors requiring specific items (Pet Rock) or actions (Rune Thrownaxe special attack on a barrier). These can be bypassed with high Agility shortcuts (81+ and 85+ Agility, boostable).
- Running past numerous aggressive monsters (Dagannoths, Wallasalkis, Rock Lobsters).
- Travel to Island:
- Waterbirth Teleport (Lunar Spellbook/Tablet/POH Portal).
- Enchanted Lyre(i) teleport (requires Fremennik Hard Diary).
- Fremennik Sea Boots 2/3/4 teleport + talk to Jarvald.
- Rellekka Teleport + talk to Jarvald.
- Skills: No mandatory skills besides quest reqs, but 70-85+ Combat Stats (Attack, Strength, Defence, Ranged, Magic, Prayer, Hitpoints) are highly recommended. 81+/85+ Agility significantly speeds up travel.
The Kings & Their Mechanics
The lair is a multi-combat zone containing all three Kings simultaneously. Spinolyps also inhabit the surrounding water, attacking with Ranged (poisonous) and Magic (prayer drain).
- Dagannoth Rex (Melee):
- Attack: Melee only (Max hit ~20s).
- Weakness: Magic.
- Prayer: Protect from Melee.
- Strategy: Easily safespotted along the eastern or western edges of the central island using Magic. Vulnerable and generally the easiest to solo.
- Drops: Berserker Ring, Warrior Ring, Dragon Axe, Dagannoth Bones.
- Dagannoth Prime (Magic):
- Attack: Magic only (Max hit ~50). Very dangerous.
- Weakness: Ranged.
- Prayer: Protect from Magic is essential.
- Strategy: Attack with strong Ranged gear (Blowpipe, Bowfa, Crossbows). Can sometimes be attacked from range without aggroing others.
- Drops: Seers' Ring, Mud Battlestaff, Dragon Axe, Dagannoth Bones.
- Dagannoth Supreme (Ranged):
- Attack: Ranged only (Max hit ~30s). Can hit multiple targets.
- Weakness: Melee.
- Prayer: Protect from Missiles.
- Strategy: Attack with strong Melee gear (Whip, Rapier, Fang, Scythe). Vulnerable but often spawns close to other Kings, making isolation tricky.
- Drops: Archers' Ring, Seercull, Dragon Axe, Dagannoth Bones.
- Spinolyps (Water): Attack with Ranged (poison) and Magic (prayer drain). Kill them for supplies (Seaweed spores, Oyster pearls) or use Guthan's/SGS/Blood spells to heal off them during downtime. Wear high Ranged defence gear and bring Antidote++.
Strategy Insights
- Entering the Lair: Activate Protect from Magic before climbing down the ladder, as Prime often attacks immediately. Assess which Kings are near the ladder.
- Soloing Rex: Run counter-clockwise along the southern edge to the eastern wall safespot. Use Magic (Iban's Blast, Trident, Sang Staff, Shadow) to kill Rex. Wear Ranged defence gear (Karil's, Armadyl) and pray Magic/Ranged against Spinolyps. Can use Blood spells or Guthan's for sustain.
- Soloing Prime: More difficult due to needing Ranged gear (lower defence). Enter carefully, try to isolate Prime on the northern side if possible. Kill quickly and be prepared to tank/pray against other Kings if needed. Telekinetic Grab may be needed for drops.
- Tribrid (All Kings - Solo/Team): Requires efficient gear switching (Magic, Ranged, Melee setups) and prayer management.
- Rotation: A common solo cycle is: Safespot Rex (East wall) -> Run North, kill Prime (Ranged) -> Run West/SW, kill Supreme (Melee) -> Return East, kill Rex. Adjust based on spawns.
- Handling Aggro: If multiple Kings attack, prioritize killing the highest threat (usually Prime or Supreme depending on your gear/prayer). Use the environment (pillars/walls) to block line of sight or trap Rex if possible. High defence gear helps tank Supreme/Rex while focusing Prime.
- Teams: Often split roles (e.g., one player tanks/kills Rex, another handles Prime/Supreme). Makes managing aggro and prayers much easier. Communication is key.
- Slayer Task Lair: A separate instance is available if on a Dagannoth task. You can only damage Kings here while on task.
Recommended Gear & Inventory
- Rex Solo (Magic): Trident/Iban's Staff, Magic Damage gear (Ahrim's, Ancestral), Ranged Defence gear (Karil's/Armadyl switch or integrated), Book of the Dead/Darkness, Prayer Bonus gear, Blood spells/Guthan's/SGS for healing.
- Tribrid (Solo/Team): Requires switches for all three styles. Prioritize Prayer Bonus and Ranged Defence where possible. Example:
- Melee: Whip/Tentacle/Fang + Defender/Spectral, Fighter Torso/Bandos, Tassets, Fire Cape, Torture, Barrows Gloves, Prims.
- Ranged: Blowpipe/Bowfa + Ava's, Armadyl/Masori top/bottom, Anguish, Pegasians.
- Magic: Trident/Sang + Occult, Ancestral/Ahrim's top/bottom, Imbued Cape, Eternals, Tormented Bracelet, Ward.
- Hybrid Items: Slayer Helm (i) (on task), Barrows Gloves, Blessed D'hide Boots, Fury/Blood Fury.
- Inventory: Rune Thrownaxe + Pet Rock (if no Agi shortcuts), Super Combat/Ranging/Magic Potions, Prayer Potions/Super Restores, High-healing Food (Brews/Restores recommended for Tribrid), Antidote++, Rune Pouch (optional - Alchs, Telegrab, Blood spells), Emergency Teleport. Stamina Potions crucial for long run.
Notable Drops
- Unique Rings: Berserker Ring (Rex), Warrior Ring (Rex), Seers' Ring (Prime), Archers' Ring (Supreme). These are the primary targets.
- Other Uniques: Dragon Axe (All), Mud Battlestaff (Prime), Seercull (Supreme).
- Common: Dagannoth Bones (noted with Fremennik Elite Diary), various seeds, herbs, noted resources, alchables.
Conclusion
The Dagannoth Kings offer a classic multi-boss challenge with highly desirable ring upgrades as rewards. While reaching them can be tedious without Agility shortcuts, mastering the safe spotting of Rex or the complex Tribrid rotation for all three provides consistent profit and engaging PvM gameplay. Remember your prayers, bring antipoison, and prepare for a lengthy battle deep beneath Waterbirth Island.
