OSRS Demonic Gorilla Guide: Mastering the Monkey Mayhem
Demonic Gorillas are one of the most mechanically intensive solo monsters in Old School RuneScape. Unlocked after the grandmaster quest Monkey Madness II
, these creatures are a true test of a player's ability to multitask, requiring constant prayer switching, gear switching, and movement.
Mastering them is a key step into high-level PvM and the only way to get your hands on the incredibly valuable Zenyte shard
. This guide will break down their complex behavior.
The Core Mechanic: The Three-Hit Switch
The entire fight revolves around one key rule: After a Demonic Gorilla misses three attacks in a row, it will switch its attack style.
- The Cycle: The gorilla will use one of the three combat styles (Melee, Ranged, or Magic). If its attacks hit you (deal damage), it will continue using that style. But as soon as it hits three "zeros" in a row, it will immediately change to one of the other two styles.
- Your Job: Your goal is to use the correct protection prayer to force these misses, and then quickly react when it changes its attack style.
The Second Mechanic: Prayer Switching
In addition to changing their attacks, Demonic Gorillas also use protection prayers.
- The Rule: After taking a certain amount of damage (around 50), the gorilla will switch its protection prayer to protect against the style you are using.
- Your Job: You must bring weapons for at least two different combat styles (typically Melee and Ranged). When the gorilla starts protecting against your attacks, you must switch your gear and attack with the other style.
The Special Attacks
As if that wasn't enough, they also have two special attacks.
- Boulder Toss: The gorilla will throw a boulder at your location, which you must dodge by moving one tile away.
- Prayer Drain: The gorilla can also use a magical attack that drains your prayer points if it hits.
The Strategy: A Constant Reaction
A fight against a Demonic Gorilla is a non-stop dance of reaction and adaptation.
- Identify the Attack: The gorilla will start with one of the three styles. Turn on the correct protection prayer.
- Count the Zeros: Keep track of its hits. Once you see three zeros, be ready for the switch.
- React to the Switch: As soon as it changes its attack style, you must change your prayer.
- Watch for Prayer Switches: When you see the gorilla's overhead prayer appear, switch your weapon and attack style.
- Dodge Boulders: Keep an eye out for the falling rock special attack and move accordingly.
Recommended Gear: The Tribrid Setup
You need to be effective with multiple combat styles.
- Melee Weapon:
Arclight
is best-in-slot, as gorillas are demons. AnAbyssal Whip
is a great alternative. - Ranged Weapon:
Toxic Blowpipe
is the most common and effective choice. ADragon Crossbow
also works well. - Armour: Most players wear their Melee gear (Bandos, Fighter Torso) and bring a 3-4 item switch for their Ranged gear (Armadyl d'hide top/bottom, Ava's Assembler). A
Slayer Helmet (i)
is essential on a black demon task.
The Ultimate Reward: The Zenyte Shard
The reason players endure this intense fight is the loot.
Zenyte Shard
(1/300): This is the grand prize. A Zenyte shard can be crafted into one of four best-in-slot jewelry pieces:Amulet of Torture
(Melee)Necklace of Anguish
(Ranged)Tormented Bracelet
(Magic)Ring of Suffering
(Defensive)
- Receiving a Zenyte shard is a multi-million GP payday.
Conclusion
Demonic Gorillas are one of the best-designed solo monsters in OSRS. They are a true skill-check that forces you to master the fundamentals of high-level PvM. The fight is intense, rewarding, and the gateway to some of the most powerful gear in the game.
