OSRS Kree'arra Guide: Ranged Strategies (Chins & Crossbow)

Kree'arra, the formidable Aviansie general leading Armadyl's forces in the God Wars Dungeon (GWD), presents a unique challenge. As an airborne boss, melee is ineffective, forcing players to rely on Ranged or Magic. This guide focuses on the popular and effective Ranged strategies, particularly using Chinchompas and Crossbows, to take down Kree'arra and claim his valuable Armadyl drops.

Accessing Armadyl's Eyrie (south-west area of the main GWD) requires 70 Ranged and a Mithril Grapple used with any crossbow. Entry to Kree'arra's chamber requires 40 Armadylean kill count (KC) or an Ecumenical Key. Completing Combat Achievements reduces the required KC. Remember, Kree'arra and his minions count as Aviansie for Slayer tasks.

Kree'arra's Mechanics

Survival against Kree'arra hinges on understanding his attacks:

  • Ranged Attack: Grey tornadoes that hit all players in the room for up to 69 damage. This is his primary and most dangerous attack. Protect from Missiles is mandatory.
  • Magic Attack: Blue tornadoes that also hit all players, dealing up to 21 damage. Importantly, this attack rolls accuracy against your Ranged Defence, not Magic Defence.
  • Melee Attack: A talon swipe hitting up to 25 damage. Kree'arra only uses this if he is not currently being targeted and flies up close to a player. Proper kiting or consistent attacking prevents this.
  • Knockback: Both tornado attacks can push players back one tile unless they are standing in a corner.

The Bodyguards

Kree'arra is protected by three loyal Aviansie:

  • Flight Kilisa (Melee): Hits up to 15 damage. Often the primary target for the Chinchompa method.
  • Wingman Skree (Magic): Hits up to 16 damage. Generally inaccurate but should be killed after Kree'arra.
  • Flockleader Geerin (Ranged): Hits up to 25 damage. Your Protect from Missiles prayer negates his damage while Kree'arra is alive.

Strategy 1: The Chinchompa Method

This is a highly effective, albeit expensive, method, especially for players without top-tier weapons like the Twisted Bow or Bow of Faerdhinen.

  • Concept: Kree'arra has high defence, making direct hits difficult. Chinchompas explode, dealing AoE damage. If a Chinchompa successfully hits its primary target, the splash damage hits nearby monsters based less on their defence.
  • Execution:
    1. Lure Kree'arra and Flight Kilisa (the melee minion) close together, often in the south-western corner. You can achieve this by standing in the corner initially.
    2. Target Flight Kilisa with Red or Black Chinchompas (Black are better).
    3. The splash damage from the Chinchompas hitting Kilisa will damage Kree'arra significantly.
    4. Off-Tick Targeting: To prevent Kree'arra from using melee, you must constantly switch targets. After throwing a chinchompa at Kilisa, immediately click Kree'arra (target him), then click back on Kilisa just before your next chinchompa throw. Repeat this rhythm. This keeps Kree'arra targeted off-tick, preventing his melee attack.
    5. Once Kree'arra dies, switch to a Toxic Blowpipe or crossbow to kill Wingman Skree (Magic), then stack the remaining minions (Kilisa/Geerin) if possible and use Blood Barrage to heal. Pray appropriately against the remaining minions.

Strategy 2: Crossbow Method

While slower than Chinchompas or high-end bows, crossbows offer a viable, more affordable alternative.

  • Concept: Utilize enchanted Diamond Bolts (e) for their armour-piercing special effect, or Ruby Bolts (e) at the start of the fight for high initial damage. Kiting is essential.
  • Execution:
    1. Equip an Armadyl Crossbow, Dragon Hunter Crossbow (if affordable, though less effective here than vs Dragons), or Rune/Dragon Crossbow.
    2. Use Diamond Bolts (e) primarily. Ruby Bolts (e) can be used for the first few hits when Kree'arra's HP is high.
    3. Kiting: Continuously run around the room, attacking Kree'arra between movements. The goal is to stay out of his melee range and minimize damage from the magic minion. Aim to "hit and run" – attack, then immediately click to move before Kree'arra's attack animation finishes.
    4. Pray Protect from Missiles at all times while Kree'arra is alive.
    5. After Kree'arra dies, kill the minions, prioritizing Wingman Skree (Magic). Use Blood Barrage for healing if possible.

Other Ranged Options

  • Bow of Faerdhinen (BoFa) / Crystal Armour: Excellent accuracy and damage, especially with the Crystal Armour set bonus. Allows for faster attack speed (4-tick) and effective kiting.
  • Twisted Bow: Extremely effective due to Kree'arra's high Magic level, often out-DPSing Chinchompas in max gear. Requires precise kiting.
  • Magic (Tumeken's Shadow): While this guide focuses on Ranged, Tumeken's Shadow with max magic gear is the absolute BiS conventional method, surpassing even Chinchompas. However, it requires very expensive gear.

Refer to the detailed strategy sections in the provided data (Chinchompas, Ranged Tank, Tbow/Bowfa tabs) for specifics. General points:

  • Armour: Best Ranged gear you can afford (Masori (f), Armadyl, Karil's, Crystal). High Ranged Defence is key. Slayer Helmet (i) if on an Aviansie task.
  • Weapon: Chinchompas (Red/Black), Armadyl/Dragon Crossbow, Bow of Faerdhinen, Twisted Bow. Toxic Blowpipe for specs/minions.
  • Ammo: Relevant Chinchompas, Diamond/Ruby Bolts (e), Dragon/Amethyst Arrows.
  • Inventory: Stamina Potions (essential for kiting unless using specific no-stam methods), Ranging Potions/Bastions, Saradomin Brews & Super Restores, Bones to Peaches tablets, Rune Pouch (Blood/Ice Barrage runes), Emergency teleport, Armadyl item, Mithril Grapple.

Notable Drops

  • Uniques: Armadyl Helmet (1/381), Armadyl Chestplate (1/381), Armadyl Chainskirt (1/381), Armadyl Hilt (1/508), Armadyl Crossbow (1/508), Godsword Shards (1/254 any shard).
  • Other: Black D'hide Body, Rune Crossbow, Rune Arrows/Bolts, Ranging Potions, Grimy Dwarf Weeds/Seeds.
  • Tertiary: Pet Kree'arra (1/5,000), Elite Clue Scrolls (1/250).

(Drop rates are estimates based on the Wiki/Drop Rate Project data provided).

Conclusion

Kree'arra offers some of the most valuable Ranged gear in OSRS but demands effective Ranged or Magic strategies due to his flight. The Chinchompa method provides excellent kill speeds by bypassing his high defence, while crossbows offer a more budget-friendly approach requiring good kiting skills. Master these techniques, and the riches of Armadyl could be yours.
