OSRS Tempoross Guide: Taming the Spirit of the Sea

Tempoross, the Spirit of the Sea, is a unique skilling boss in Old School RuneScape that challenges players' Fishing skills rather than their combat prowess. Located in Tempoross Cove south of Al Kharid, players join the Spirit Anglers to subdue the ancient entity and calm its raging storms. This guide covers the mechanics, strategies, and rewards involved in the Tempoross encounter.

Requirements & Getting There

  • Skill: 35 Fishing.
  • Items (Obtainable on-site): Rope, Hammer, Buckets, Harpoon. (Recommended: Bring your best Harpoon, potentially Imcando Hammer).
  • Location: Tempoross Cove, Ruins of Unkah (south of Al Kharid).
  • Travel:
    • Fastest: Ferry from south Al Kharid bank.
    • Pharaoh's Sceptre (Jaldraocht teleport) + run SW.
    • Camulet (Enakhra's Temple teleport) + run S.
    • Magic Carpet (Menaphos) + run NW.
    • Grouping Teleport (Minigames).

Board the ship at the sea spirit dock to begin the encounter (solo or group). Official worlds exist for mass encounters (see data dump).

Fighting Tempoross: The Two Phases

The goal is to deplete Tempoross's Essence before it becomes enraged (after 3 full energy cycles).

Phase 1: Depleting Energy

  1. Fish: Catch Raw Harpoonfish from fishing spots around the cove. Double spots yield fish faster. Use your best harpoon (Dragon, Infernal, Crystal offer benefits). Barbarian bare-handed fishing also works.
  2. Cook (Optional): Cooking Harpoonfish at the shrines increases the energy drained per fish (15 vs 10 raw) and points awarded, but lowers Fishing XP/hr.
  3. Load Cannons: Deposit Raw or Cooked Harpoonfish into the crates next to the ship cannons. The cannons automatically fire, depleting Tempoross's energy (visible % bar).
  4. Survive Attacks: Tempoross attacks periodically (see below). Avoid or mitigate them to prevent losing tools/fish.
  5. Repeat: Continue fishing, cooking (optional), and loading until Tempoross's energy reaches 0%.

Phase 2: Draining Essence

  1. Tempoross Submerges: When energy hits 0%, Tempoross dives, leaving swirling Spirit Pools at the end of the docks.
  2. Fish Spirit Pool: Use your harpoon on the Spirit Pools to catch Energised Fish. This directly damages Tempoross's Essence (second health bar). Fishing here also restores some run energy.
  3. Victory or Repeat: If Essence reaches 0% before Energy recovers to 100%, you win! If Energy recovers first, Phase 1 restarts, but Essence damage is retained. The fight fails if this cycle repeats 3 times without victory.

Tempoross's Attacks (Hindrances, Not Damage)

These attacks disrupt activities and can destroy held/inventoried tools (Rope, Hammer, Buckets) and Harpoonfish if not handled correctly.

  • Wave Attack: A large wave sweeps the cove. Tether yourself to a Mast (ship) or Totem Pole (island) using a Rope (or Spirit Angler outfit passive) to avoid being washed away and losing items. Tether points can break and require hammer repairs. Doesn't occur below 10% energy.
  • Lightning Attack: Clouds appear and strike areas, creating fires. Douse fires with Buckets of Water. Running through fire destroys items. Doesn't occur below 10% energy, but fires persist/spread.
  • Torrent Attack: A water spout targets a cannon, disabling it and stunning loaders. Step away or switch cannons to avoid. Doesn't occur below 10% energy.

Strategy Insights

  • Cooking vs. Not Cooking:
    • Not Cooking (Max XP): Fish, load raw fish immediately. Fastest Fishing XP. Use Crystal Harpoon for best rates.
    • Cooking (Max Points/Rewards): Fish, cook at shrines, load cooked fish. Slower XP but yields significantly more points per round, leading to more reward permits. Use Infernal Harpoon (auto-cooks 1/3rd) for best results here.
  • Double Spots: Prioritize fishing at the double Harpoonfish spots whenever they appear.
  • Efficiency: Get tools from crates at the start. Use your best harpoon. Full (Spirit) Angler outfit provides XP boost/rope passive. Imcando Hammer saves space/can't be lost. Lightbearer ring boosts Dragon/Infernal/Crystal harpoon spec usage.
  • Wave Timing: You have time to catch 1-2 more fish or repair a tether point after the wave warning appears before needing to tether.
  • Solo: Requires balancing fishing, cooking (if chosen), loading, and handling all mechanics yourself. Aim for ~18 cooked fish loaded per cycle to defeat it reliably within 3 phases. See data dump for specific fish counts based on inventory.
  • Mass Worlds: Less individual responsibility for repairs/fires. Often focuses on one cannon per side. Can be faster or slower depending on group coordination. Cooking is common for points.

Experience and Rewards

  • Experience: Primarily Fishing XP from catching Harpoonfish and fishing the Spirit Pool. Bonus Construction XP for repairing masts/totems. Optional Cooking XP. Strength XP if bare-hand fishing. XP rates depend heavily on level, gear, and strategy (see data dump tables).
  • Reward Permits: Earned based on points accumulated during the fight (see Activities list in data dump for point values). Minimum 500 points needed. 1 permit at 2000 points, +1 per 700 points after, chance for bonus permit based on leftover points.
  • Rewards Pool: Fish in the pool near the dockmaster back at Ruins of Unkah using a small/big net to claim rewards based on permits earned. Fishing level affects loot quality.
  • Unique Rewards:
    • Fish Barrel: Stores 28 raw fish. (1/400 base chance, tradeable for pages if duplicate)
    • Tackle Box: Stores fishing equipment. (1/400 base chance, tradeable for pages if duplicate)
    • Tome of Water (empty): Equippable book acting as infinite water runes, boosts water spell damage/accuracy. Charged with Soaked Pages. (1/1600 base chance)
    • Dragon Harpoon: (1/8000 base chance)
    • Big Harpoonfish: POH display item. (1/1600 base chance, tradeable for pages if duplicate)
    • Tiny Tempor Pet: (1/8000 base chance)
    • Spirit Flakes: 50% chance for extra fish catch (stacks with Rada's Blessing). Common reward.
    • Soaked Pages: Charges the Tome of Water. Common reward.

Conclusion

Tempoross offers a dynamic and engaging way to train Fishing, providing solid XP rates and a chance at unique, useful rewards. Whether you prioritize maximum experience or maximizing reward points, understanding the phases, attacks, and efficient actions is key to successfully calming the Spirit of the Sea.
