OSRS Vale Totems Guide: A New Fletching Minigame

Tired of making darts or stringing bows at the bank? The Vale Totems minigame, located in the scenic Auburn Valley of Varlamore, offers a brand new, active, and engaging way to train your Fletching skill.

This guide will walk you through the gameplay loop of building, carving, and decorating totems to earn XP and unique rewards.

Getting Started

  • Quest: You must complete the introductory Vale Totems miniquest.
  • Skill: 20 Fletching (minimum).
  • Location: The Auburn Valley in north-western Varlamore.
  • Items: An axe (or logs), a knife, and run energy restoration.

The Gameplay Loop: Tending the Totems

The minigame revolves around maintaining eight Vale Totem Sites scattered around the valley.

  1. Build a Totem: Run to an empty totem site and use one log to build the base totem. This grants a small amount of Construction XP and restores 15% of your run energy.
  2. Identify the Spirits: Near each totem site, three of five possible animal spirits (e.g., Eagle, Snake, Jaguar) will be active. Your goal is to carve these specific spirits into the totem.
  3. Carve and Decorate: Use your knife on the totem to carve the correct spirits. Then, use four fletched items (like unstrung bows or shields) to decorate it. This provides the bulk of your Fletching XP.
  4. Attract the Ents: Roaming Ents will visit your completed totems. If your carvings match the local spirits, the Ent will leave a large pile of Vale offerings. If they don't match, you'll receive far fewer offerings.
  5. Collect and Repeat: Collect the offerings from the pile. Each visit from an Ent reduces the totem's durability, and it will eventually collapse, allowing you to start the process over.

The goal is to run a continuous circuit, keeping as many of the eight totems active as possible.

Experience Rates

Vale Totems is a fantastic active training method, offering competitive XP rates that scale with the logs you use.

  • Yew Logs (65 Fletching): ~130,000 - 150,000 Fletching XP/hr.
  • Magic Logs (80 Fletching): ~245,000 - 285,000 Fletching XP/hr.
  • Redwood Logs (90 Fletching): ~300,000 - 350,000 Fletching XP/hr.

You also gain a small amount of passive Construction XP for building the totems.

Rewards: Offerings and Research Points

The Vale offerings you collect are the primary currency of the minigame.

  • Rummaging: You can rummage through your offerings for a chance at various items, including a Fletching knife (acts as a chisel), a Bow string spool, and a cosmetic Greenman mask.
  • Research Points: For every 100 offerings you rummage, you also get one Vale research point. These points can be spent at the Vale Research Exchange shop to purchase the unique rewards directly.

Ironman Strategy

Vale Totems is a solid training option for Ironmen who have a surplus of logs.

  • Active XP: It provides a much more engaging way to burn through logs from Miscellania or Woodcutting than simply fletching them at a bank.
  • Resource Light: The minigame itself doesn't require many external supplies beyond the logs, making it fairly self-sufficient.
  • The Trade-off: The rewards are primarily cosmetic or minor quality-of-life items. The time spent here might be better used fletching items for High Alchemy or making ammunition, depending on your account's needs.

Conclusion

Vale Totems is a well-designed skilling minigame that offers a refreshing and effective way to train Fletching. The XP rates are competitive with the best active methods, and the gameplay loop is much more involved than traditional training. If you're looking for a new way to get your next Fletching levels, a trip to the Auburn Valley is well worth your time.
