OSRS Pete Kayer Challenges & Ancient Cape Guide
Pete Kayer's PvP challenges at Ferox Enclave: all five drills, the Penultimate and Final fights, tips to beat Pete, and how to unlock the Ancient cape kit.
Old School finally has a proper PvP tutorial. Pete Kayer has set up at Ferox Enclave with a set of challenges covering the skills that decide most Wilderness fights: praying correctly, switching gear, freezing, using special attacks and combo eating. Beat Pete himself at the end and you unlock the new Ancient cape cosmetic kit.
This guide covers where to find Pete, what each challenge teaches, how to beat the Penultimate and Final fights, and everything we know about the Ancient cosmetic kit.
Pete Kayer at a Glance
- Released: 7 October 2026 (the "PvP Tutorial" from the RuneFest 2026 roadmap)
- Location: Ferox Enclave, the safe zone in the Wilderness
- Structure: 5 practice challenges → Pete's Penultimate Challenge → Pete's Final Challenge
- Main reward: Ancient cosmetic kit for the
Imbued god cape(plus Max cape and Deadman cape versions) - Other rewards: Blighted supplies and a one-off total of 25 LMS shop points
- Gear needed: None. You set up the loadouts for Pete's fights in his interface.
Where Is Pete Kayer?
Pete is in Ferox Enclave, the safe area in the low-level Wilderness with a bank, a pool of refreshment and teleports nearby. A Ring of dueling is the quickest way there.
There are two ways to start:
- Talk to Pete to open the challenge selection interface.
- Right-click Pete → Information → Loadouts to set up your gear for both Pete fights and your inventory for the Combo Eating challenge before you start.
Take a minute to set up your loadouts before your first attempt. Use the inventory layout and prayer positions you'd use in a real fight. Muscle memory from a layout you'll never use again won't help you.
The Five Pete Kayer Challenges
Each challenge focuses on one skill. Four have an endless mode, so you can keep practising after you've completed them.
| Challenge | What it teaches | Practice mode |
|---|---|---|
| Prayer Protection | Watching your opponent's gear and switching to the right protection prayer in time | Endless mode that gets faster up to maximum intensity |
| Power of Freezes | Using freezing/binding spells to control opponents and buy time to escape or log out, plus handling multiple attackers with Mithril/Adamant seeds | Endless mode |
| Special Attacks | Surprising your opponent with special attacks from a range of weapons | Free practice once completed, with supplied spec weapons and fast special attack energy regen |
| Gear Switching | Switching your attack style to match your opponent's gear and prayers | Endless mode, and you can set how fast the opponent switches |
| Combo Eating | Eating Sharks, Saradomin brews and Karambwans in the right order, timed around incoming damage | Endless mode |
Prayer Protection
This is the core PvP skill. Your opponent switches weapons, and you need the matching protection prayer up before their next hit lands. Learn to recognise the weapon, not just the armour, because skilled players switch their weapon last to hide what they're about to do.
Use the endless mode as a warm-up. Once you can handle the highest intensity cleanly, you're ready for most of what Pete will throw at you.
Power of Freezes
Freezes are the key to controlling a fight. A good freeze lets you get away from an opponent, set up a combo, or buy time to log out. The challenge also covers what to do when more than one player is attacking you, using Mithril and Adamant seeds. That situation catches a lot of players out in the Wilderness.
Special Attacks
A special attack only works when your opponent doesn't see it coming. This challenge teaches you to switch to a spec weapon and use it at an unexpected moment. Hitting it as soon as your opponent's prayer goes up against your current style is the classic example.
After you complete it, it becomes a free practice mode. You get a range of spec weapons and fast special attack energy regen, so you can practise switching weapons like the Voidwaker without spending anything. (Here's our Voidwaker guide if you want to know more about it.)
Gear Switching
This is the attacking side of Prayer Protection. When your opponent prays against your style, switch to a style they're not protecting against. The endless mode lets you set how fast your opponent switches, so start slow and focus on clean clicks before speeding up.
PvMers get a lot out of this one too. Quick, accurate gear switches matter at the Inferno, in raids and at bosses like Zulrah.
Combo Eating
Combo eating means eating multiple healing items on the same tick to heal a lot at once. The standard combo is a Shark, then a Saradomin brew, then a Karambwan. Get the order wrong and you'll lose ticks. The challenge also teaches when to eat. Eating too early wastes food. Eating too late and you get knocked out by a combo that could have been survived.
Pete's Penultimate and Final Challenges
Complete all five challenges to unlock the two fights against Pete himself.
Pete's Penultimate Challenge
A fight against Pete in mid-tier gear. He goes easier on you here, but Jagex says it can still be tough if you don't have much PvP experience. It's your first test of using everything from the challenges together.
Pete's Final Challenge
Now Pete fights in high-end gear and uses every trick: he fakes his gear switches, predicts yours, freezes you and combo eats to recover. Jagex has said this fight is meant to be genuinely hard, and it will overwhelm you if you're new to PvP. It's there to show how much you've improved, not to be an easy reward.
Hotfix note: Shortly after release, Jagex deployed a hotfix that lowered the HP of Pete's final form by 150, and they're watching player feedback on the difficulty. Check the official game updates in case it changes again.
Tips for Beating Pete Kayer
- Focus on one problem per attempt. After each loss, work out what went wrong. Was your prayer late? Did you click so many items that your attack got delayed? Did you eat before the damage landed? Fix that one thing next time.
- Go back to the matching challenge. If you keep getting hit off-prayer, spend a few minutes on Prayer Protection's endless mode before trying again. Retrying the full fight over and over is the slowest way to improve.
- Don't panic eat. Pete combo eats properly, and you need to as well. One clean combo is better than five rushed clicks.
- Watch for fake switches. If Pete swaps armour but keeps his weapon, he hasn't changed attack style. Pray against the weapon.
- Use your freezes. Freezing Pete gives you time to get your switches and eats in order. Don't save them all for an escape.
The Ancient Cape Cosmetic Kit
Beat Pete's Final Challenge and he gives you an item from his collection: an Ancient cosmetic kit for your Imbued god cape. Jagex also showed versions for the Max cape and the Deadman cape.
Is the Ancient Cape Cosmetic Only?
Yes. As far as Jagex has announced, the kit only changes how the cape looks. It doesn't add Magic damage or any other stats. It's a cosmetic reward to show you've beaten one of the hardest PvP tests in the game.
Do I Need an Imbued God Cape First?
The kit is applied to a cape you already have. Imbued god capes come from completing Mage Arena II, which involves fighting through Kolodion's challenge in the deep Wilderness. If you don't have one yet, our minigame services are a good place to start.
Is the Ancient Cape Better Than the Infernal Cape?
No, they're not comparable. The Ancient kit is cosmetic and goes on a magic cape, while the Infernal cape is the best-in-slot melee cape. If that's the cape you really want, our Infernal cape service can get it done.
Other Rewards: Blighted Supplies & LMS Points
As you complete challenges, Pete also hands out:
- Blighted supplies: a small stack of Blighted food and potions to get you started in the Wilderness. Remember that Blighted items only work in the Wilderness.
- 25 Last Man Standing points: a one-off total, not 25 per attempt, to spend at Justine's Last Shopper Standing shop. Handy if you're just short of something you want.
Want more LMS points after that? Last Man Standing is the natural next step after Pete. It's real PvP against other players with no risk to your items.
Are Pete Kayer's Challenges Worth It for PvMers?
Definitely. Even if you never plan to PK, the challenges train the same skills that high-level PvM relies on:
- Prayer Protection improves how quickly you react to visual cues, which is useful for bosses with style switches.
- Gear Switching trains fast, accurate clicking for multi-style fights.
- Combo Eating is how you survive big damage spikes at the hardest bosses.
The challenges won't teach you a specific boss's attack timings, but they make you cleaner at the basics. If you're working on prayer switching for PvM, our prayer flicking guide pairs well with Pete's drills.
Pete Kayer's challenges are the best way Old School has ever had to learn PvP without risking your bank. Work through the five challenges, use the endless modes to fix your weak spots, and treat the Final Challenge as a real test of how far you've come. The Ancient cape kit is your proof that you passed it.
