Rune Dragons are the apex of the metal dragon family, powerful and resilient beasts unlocked only after completing the epic grandmaster quest, Dragon Slayer II. These formidable opponents are one of the most consistent and profitable solo money-makers in the game for high-level players.

This guide will break down their complex attack patterns, the specialized gear required, and the strategy needed to farm them effectively.

Getting Started: The Lithkren Vault

  • Quest: You must have fully completed Dragon Slayer II.
  • Location: The Lithkren Vault, which is at the very end of the Lithkren Dungeon. The entrance to the dungeon is on the west side of Fossil Island.

The Mandatory Requirement: Dragonfire Protection

As the most powerful of the chromatic dragons, this is absolutely essential.

  • The Attack: They use all three combat styles, as well as two different forms of dragonfire.
  • The Protection: You must have both an Anti-dragon Shield (or DFS/Ward) and an Antifire Potion active at all times.

The Fight: A Multi-Phase Battle

Rune Dragons have a unique mechanic where they switch between two phases, each with its own attack style.

Phase 1: Ground Phase

  • Attacks: The dragon will be on the ground and attack with Melee and a standard Magic attack.

To combat their extremely high defences, specialized gear is almost mandatory for efficient kills.

  • Weakness: Rune Dragons are weakest to Stab attacks.

    • Best: The Dragon Hunter Lance is the undisputed best-in-slot weapon. It provides a massive 20% accuracy and damage boost and attacks with the Stab style.
    • Alternative: A Zamorakian hasta.
  • Armour: Wear your Slayer Helmet (i) (if on a blue dragon task) and your best defensive Melee gear with a high Stab bonus, such as Bandos or Torva armour.
  • Shield: A Dragonfire Shield provides excellent defensive bonuses in addition to its protection.

Rune Dragons are one of the best money-makers in the game due to their incredibly consistent loot table.

  • Guaranteed Loot: Every kill drops Dragon bones, Rune bars, and either a Wrath rune or Dragon bolts (unf).

    • Draconic Visage (1/5,000)
    • Dragon Metal Slice (1/10,000): A component for the Dragon Kiteshield.
    • Dragon Platelegs & Plateskirt
