OSRS Deranged Archaeologist Guide: The Fossil Island Demi-Boss

Patrolling the ruins of Fossil Island is the Deranged Archaeologist, a crazed academic who has clearly spent a little too much time among the fossils. This demi-boss is a fantastic entry-point into solo bossing, offering a simple, repeatable fight with decent rewards.

Getting Started: Location and Requirements

  • Quest: You must have completed the Bone Voyage quest to access Fossil Island.
  • Location: The Deranged Archaeologist is found in the ruins on the western side of Fossil Island, just south of the Museum Camp. The area is single-way combat.
  • Recommended Stats: 60+ Ranged is recommended for efficient kills.

The Fight: Simple and Predictable

The Archaeologist is a very straightforward boss with only two attacks to worry about. He is also very weak to the Ranged combat style.

Standard Attack: Book Toss

  • The Archaeologist's primary attack is a Ranged-based projectile that looks like a flying book.
  • The Strategy: Use Protect from Missiles. This will block all damage from this attack.

Special Attack: "Learn to read!"

This is his only special attack, and it's very easy to avoid.

  • The Mechanic: He will shout "Learn to read!" and throw three explosive books into the air. Shadows will appear on the ground where they are going to land.
  • The Strategy: Simply step a few tiles away from the shadows to completely avoid the damage. The attack has a 3x3 area of effect.

The entire fight is a simple cycle: keep Protect from Missiles active and move when he yells his catchphrase.

Since the boss has very low Ranged defence, you should bring your best Ranged gear.

  • Weapon:
    • Best: Toxic Blowpipe.
    • Great: Magic Shortbow (i) with Amethyst Arrows.
    • Budget: Rune Crossbow with broad or mithril bolts.
  • Armour: Wear your best Ranged gear, such as Armadyl d'hide or Blessed d'hide.
  • Inventory: Your ranged weapon, a few prayer potions, and an emergency teleport. You will not need food if you correctly pray and dodge the special attack.

The Rewards

The Deranged Archaeologist is a great target for his consistent loot and chance at a valuable clue.

  • Consistent Loot: He has a generous drop table filled with noted herbs, seeds, and various supplies, making him a decent money-maker.
  • Clue Scroll (Elite) (1/200): A good chance at a valuable clue.
  • Fossil Island Notes: He drops several pages from his journal, which can be added to the Fossil Island Note Book for some lore.
