Osmumten's Fang vs. Rapier & Other Stab Weapons (OSRS DPS)

Dropped from Tombs of Amascut (ToA Guide), Osmumten's Fang shook up the melee meta with its unique accuracy mechanic. Instead of rolling once to hit, it rolls twice, making it incredibly consistent against high-defence monsters. But is it always better than the trusty Ghrazi Rapier, Blade of Saeldor, or even the niche Keris Partisan? Let's compare.

1. Understanding the Fang's Double Accuracy Roll

Normally, your chance to hit is calculated once based on your attack bonus vs the monster's defence. The Fang changes this:

  • It makes a first accuracy roll. If it succeeds, you hit.
  • If the first roll fails, it instantly makes a second accuracy roll using the same calculation. If this roll succeeds, you hit.
  • You only miss if both rolls fail.

The Result: Your chance of missing becomes (Miss Chance) * (Miss Chance). This drastically increases your overall hit chance, especially when your base accuracy isn't great.

Example:

Your Normal Accuracy vs MonsterNormal Miss ChanceFang's Miss Chance (Miss * Miss)Fang's Hit Chance (1 - Fang Miss)Boost from Fang
50%50%50% * 50% = 25%75%+25% Absolute
70%30%30% * 30% = 9%91%+21% Absolute
90%10%10% * 10% = 1%99%+9% Absolute

The lower your base accuracy, the bigger the % boost the Fang provides!

2. Fang vs. Rapier/Blade DPS Showdown

So, how does this amazing accuracy translate to actual Damage Per Second (DPS) compared to other top stab/slash weapons? (Estimates using max gear, vary with stats/prayers). We use Rapier as baseline (100%).

Boss / MonsterDefence LevelFang DPS % vs RapierBlade DPS % vs RapierNotes
General Graardor (Bandos)High~103-105%~98-100%Fang's accuracy shines
K'ril Tsutsaroth (Zammy)High~104-106%~99-101%Similar to Bandos
Corporeal BeastVery High~110-115%~95%Fang accuracy hugely beneficial
Tekton (CoX)Very High~103-105%~96-98%Fang excellent here (CoX Guide)
Verzik Vitur P3 (ToB)Low~90-95%100%Rapier strength better when accuracy easy (ToB Guide)
Zebak (ToA)Mid/High~102-104%~97-99%Fang generally preferred
VardorvisHigh~105-108%~100-102%Fang very strong stab option
  • Key Finding: Fang dominates against high-defence bosses where accuracy is the limiting factor. Rapier/Blade pull slightly ahead only when defence is very low and their higher strength bonus matters more. The Fang is more consistent overall.

3. Fang vs. Keris Partisan

The Keris Partisan (especially with a breach jewel) gets huge bonuses against Kalphites and Scarabs.

  • vs Kephri (ToA): Keris Partisan of breaching is significantly better than Fang due to the +33% damage bonus and accuracy boost against scarabs/kalphites. Always use Keris here.
  • vs Kalphite Queen: Keris Partisan is also generally better than Fang, especially the breach version.

The Fang is a general-purpose weapon; the Keris is a specific niche killer. Bring both to ToA!

4. Synergies & Use Cases

  • Great All-Rounder: The Fang's consistency makes it fantastic for general high-level PvM where you encounter varied defences. It's a core part of modern gear progression.
  • Pairs with Specs: Use Dragon Claws, Voidwaker, or Dragon Dagger specs alongside the Fang for burst damage. Lightbearer ring helps regenerate spec faster.
  • Slayer: Very effective against many Slayer monsters with high defence where stab is good (e.g., metal dragons if not using DHL/DHCB, various boss tasks).

5. Should You Upgrade to Fang?

  • Price: Fang (~40-50m mid-2025) is much cheaper than Rapier (~90-100m) or Blade (~110-120m).
  • Consider if:
    • You frequently raid Tombs of Amascut (ToA) - it's practically made for it.
    • You regularly fight high-defence bosses (Corp, GWD Melee, Tekton).
    • You want a highly consistent and reliable melee weapon for general PvM.
    • You don't already own a Rapier/Blade and need a top-tier melee weapon on a budget.
  • Maybe Stick with Rapier/Blade if:
    • Your absolute main focus is Theatre of Blood speedrunning (Rapier slightly better on low-def Verzik P3).
    • You only fight low-defence monsters where their higher strength is more beneficial.
    • You already own one and prefer its slightly higher max hit potential (even if less consistent).

Verdict: The Consistent Stab King (Best Value)

Osmumten's Fang is a phenomenal melee weapon. Its double accuracy roll provides unmatched consistency against the vast majority of mid-to-high defence bosses relevant in OSRS today. While the Rapier or Blade might eke out slightly higher DPS against zero-defence targets, the Fang's reliability and significantly lower price point make it the best overall value and arguably the most versatile top-tier melee weapon for most PvM activities in 2025.
